If you like golf, motor
racing, business conferences and eating 'cuisine' in posh restaurants with
more waiting staff than guests, then the Barcelo Montecastillo Resort is
probably for you.
This isn't a bad hotel and it's easy to get to (particularly straight from
Jerez airport - just follow the signs to the Cicuito de Velocidad) but it is
certainly not a tourist hotel. It seems to be mainly a conference
destination (both Spanish and British while we were there) and has the
bland, impersonal feel you would expect from such a place.
Our standard double room was large, well furnished and had a comfortable bed
with plenty of pillows. The sizeable full bathroom had plentiful, good
quality 'pampering' supplies! As usual in Spanish hotels there were no tea
and coffee making facilities in the room, but breakfasts (included in the
room rate) were fantastic.
The Lagar Restaurant is the only restaurant open to guests in the evening.
The food is pricey but mainly good; however, the restaurant is totally
lacking in atmosphere or any sense of 'Spanishness'. Mostly there were only
two other people eating there. However, eating in Jerez town will not be an
option for everyone as the 26 euro round trip by taxi will surely blow the
tapas budget. You're stuck between a rock and a hard place.
Our four night stay was more than enough and we regretted missing out on the
Jerez nightlife by choosing an 'out of town' destination. Saying that, it
makes it easier to drive to other places such as Olvera, Sanlucar and Arcos
if you stay here as Jerez was a nightmare to drive in and out of.

My wife and I stayed here 2 weeks ago. We could
not fault the place. The hotel rooms were spacious and well furnished and
all the staff were very smartly presented, polite and above all, very
friendly. Despite appearances form the website and the name "resort" the
place is actually relatively small scale and has an air of an informal
country club about it. We do not play golf but nevertheless the rolling
green golf course at the back of the hotel does give a very relaxing feel to
the whole experience.
We chose the hotel partly because of the facilities and partly because of
the location. The guidebooks are right when they say that many of the hotels
in Jerez are in the central area which is a bit cramped and also traffic in
the city can be busy. As we wanted to see a bit of the Costa we chose this
hotel as it is both near Jerez but also on the edge of the city if you want
to avoid it. My only comment is that if you do hire a car as we did you need
to check the road signs carefully and have a good map at hand as the road
network takes some getting used to.

we checked in on 5th feb - 8th feb. this was
our second stay at this hotel and we found on both occasions the staff were
extremly friendly and made us feel welcome especially the front desk staff
who remembered us from our first visit. the room was spotless and very
comfortable and the food and service fantastic. this hotel was by far the
best hotel we have ever stayed in and we will certainly be going back
