Barceló Solymar Bungalows Reviews

2007  Barcelo Solymar
We just came back from a 7 day trip to Cuba (returned March 15). We booked with AirCanada and they were excellent. We stayed at the Barcelo Solymar in a bungalow (better than rooms), which I would recommend.

The beds were small - we had 2 doubles in our room but they seemed smaller than a double. The pillows were huge and uncomfortable. The room was clean and fine.

There was lots of food but the quality wasn't great. We were careful with what we ate and waited for the hot fresh food to come out.... we still got a little stomach bug, so take care!

The service was good. The Cubans were very friendly and eager to assist, the other blog I just read mentioned how busy they were - it was understaffed. We made friends with quite a few... Michael and Abel are very nice they play in the band by the pool at 8:30 each night. It was well worth going to the dollar store before we left. The girls love nail polish and hair stuff, we also had toothbrushes and paste and pencils etc... A lot seem to have young families so baby/kid stuff is also good. Oh and sweets and pringles too. Bring a good supply, we also took crackers so when we were a bit sick it settled our stomach and gave it a break from the Cuban food for a meal or two...

The beach was excellent and it wasn't difficult to get a spot. The location of the hotel is excellent on a wider part of the beach and within walking distance to the town.
2007
We stayed at the Barcelo Solymar from Mar 1 to Mar 15 and had a terrific holiday. Never having been in Cuba before, we were unsure what to expect but we need not have worried.
The hotel was excellent. We stayed in one of the one bedroom bungalows and while it was not state of the art, it was spacious, quiet, clean and in a great location.
The gardens and layout of the hotel was beautiful and the beach and the colour of the sea was like a paradise.
While the buffets could be a bit repetitive there was never a night that we didn't find anything to eat. The seafood and salad bars were usually more than sufficient for through the day. In any case you get to eat at the three ala carte restaurants once per restaurant per week. We only ate offsite once during the two weeks and that was just to say that we had gone elsewhere to try the food. The best ala carte in MHO was the seafood restaurant.
We even did the romantic meal for two on the beach and for $25, it was brilliant.
We did the overnight excursion to Havana and while we spent a little too long in the restaurant through the day, we were not disappointed with Havanna. We did a few other excursions too.
Cuba is a very poor island and I did not grudge the continual tipping because the locals were very friendly and helpful. What I did grudge was the times that we were short changed (even when changing money in the official shops).
Our holiday was through First Choice and I would say it was first class. Our holiday reps were Edel and Michel and those guys were brilliant. Nothing was too much to ask them for.
The place was mostly filled with Canadians who were in the most case nice and courteous. There were a few loud younger ones as you get everywhere but this was not a national thing more a generation thing.
My wife and I are in the early 50's but went out most nights to the
show and to the Calle 62 bar. We did go to the Pirates cave night club once as well.
It was the best holiday I have had and I would recommend it to anyone
2008
We visited Cuba last March/Apr and had a wonderful time. The weather was great! the food excellent! and the people marvellous! We spent out whole time either at the club or investigating Varadero.

We all have a hectic work like so really enjoyed lolling around the pool, reading, playing volleyball in the pools and in general, had a very relaxing time. As we were only there for a week, we chose not to go into Havana (after all, we had just escaped the busy city of Vancouver). The market in Varadero was interesting and the buggy/cab drivers friendly and helpful.

The food was better than expected having read some reviews of other hotels and we were all pleased. Especially my grandson who thought it was great that he could just go and get a pizza and the bar by the pools. The dining rooms were relaxed and tasty and the waiters attentive. We tipped well and received excellent service.

I am currently trying to find a package to return with a friend.

have been to cayo coco, cuba before and I will say I loved Varadero... the beach at the solymar is awesome! I never had any trouble finding a lounger and shade without having to get up at sunrise. Plenty to go around by the pool also. Considering this resort was full you could always find a place of your own. Our room was in the main building and clean no musty smell at all although I was prepared just in case as this has been my past experience travelling. A/C was cold cold cold = worked awesome. I had heard that some people experienced problems with the hot water I didn't even know about that problem til I returned home and read it here. The only complaint I have about the rooms is the lighting in the bathroom area made make-up application tricky. Coffee makers in the room is a nice touch.

The Food - Buffet is like any other buffet but I found the service provided by the staff at the solymar above average they were fabulous. Breakfast I found left a little to be desired but lunch and dinner were better. The pool grill has good burgers and grilled chicken. We only went to the Seafood Restaurant which was great. Heard the Italian restaurant is no good almost like a frozen dinner lasagne :( so we never bothered. 24hr snack bar has great Ham & Cheese after you get home from the clubs.

I had not complaints about this resort and would go back again to stay in a heartbeat. The Cuban people are some of the nicest around. Every staff member I interacted with was helpful and friendly.

TIP: If you arrive early you won't be able to get into your room til 4pm so make sure you pack you swimsuit so you can hit the pool/beach!
